Total Knee Replacement
Total Knee Replacement ( TKR ) surgery is a technique that removes a diseased knee joint and replaces it with a prosthesis (artificial joint). A surgeon cuts away damaged bone and cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and kneecap, and replaces it with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics and polymers. Depending on the condition of the cartilage on the undersurface of the kneecap, this may also be replaced. The actual procedure takes about 1 ½ to 2 hours.

Knee Replacement Surgery India is also known as total knee arthroplasty.
Essentially, there are two main types of artificial knee replacements that are in common use:
  • Cemented Prosthesis
  • Uncemented Prosthesis
Your age and lifestyle as well as the surgeon's experience will determine the choice between a cemented or uncemented prosthesis.

Studies show that knee replacement implants function well in 90-95% of patients, even 10 to15 years after surgery. In fact, most knee replacements last more than 20 years and many will last much longer.

Total Hip Resurfacing
Traditional hip replacement requires the removal of a significant quantum of bone mass - the head of the femur (the bone in the upper leg) to replace it with an artificial ball.

Hip resurfacing is a more conservative surgical procedure which shields these worn ball-and-socket surfaces in the hip joint with smooth, durable metal components. By conserving more bone mass, younger patients retain the option of a traditional hip replacement procedure, if later needed.

The most popular hip resurfacing system is the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing system The Birmingham Hip has two main parts, both of which are made of metal, normally, high-carbide cobalt chrome.

A metal cap that is placed over the resurfaced femoral ball and the ball of the femur which is resurfaced before the metal cap is placed over it.

Total Hip Resurfacing
A Total Hip Replacement (THR) - also called a Hip Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that re-forms the hip-joint.

Osteoarthritis of the hip is the most common diagnosis that leads to hip replacement. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear. It affects the cartilage surfaces of the ball-and-socket joint of the hip. The cartilage wears out. Pain and stiffness result.

Patients with hip arthritis have difficulty walking, climbing stairs and performing routine daily activities.

Other conditions that can cause destruction of the hip joint include:
  • Loss of blood supply to the head of the thighbone
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (an inflammatory autoimmune disease)
  • Previous injury or trauma
  • Infection
  • Developmental abnormalities in the hip

Old Trauma

Old Trauma or old Fracture refers to an injury which is persistent and long-lasting. Because many chronic injuries have mild symptoms, they are often ignored or simply overlooked for months or even years. It also includes after effects of a surgery gone wrong or problems associated with implants in the body.

Most common types of old trauma include Trauma of the Tibia and Fibula. Trauma of the Tibia involves the tibial plateau, tibial tubercle, tibial eminence, proximal tibia, tibial shaft, and tibial plafond. They are generally associated with fibular trauma because the force is transmitted along the connecting membrane to the fibula. Fibular fractures also occur as the result of repetitive loading and in that case they are referred to as stress fractures. Besides this there are Lower Limb fractures which usually arise out of direct trauma. The risk of complications is directly related to the degree and nature of soft tissue damage.

Advancements  in  Medicine and  Reconstructive Surgeries  have  greatly  improved  the  ability  to  reconstruct severe trauma cases and  improve  functional  out-come. Additionally there are different types of Re-Do Surgeries depending on the nature of trauma and fracture pattern. The principles of such surgeries is to limit soft tissue  damage and preserve skin cover, to prevent or recognize compartment syndrome, to obtain  fracture alignment, encourage healing and to preserve the function of the adjacent joints.

    Treatment may be composed of:
  • Plaster application following reduction.
  • Insertion of os-calcis pin with subsequent immobilization in plaster.
  • Internal fixation by means of plates or intra-medullary devices.
  • Infection
  • External fixation

Many Patients from all over the world come to India for Old Trauma Management. In India we also have some of the best specialist doctors, who are world-renowned trauma care and management specialists.
